Basement Remodeling benefits
The rise in living costs results in the rise of in-law suites.
Multi-generational living, meaning three or more generations living under one roof, is becoming common. Perhaps it’s because assisted living costs are rising, or the average lifespan is getting longer. Whatever the reason, many people are now living with grandma and grandpa. Although it’s wonderful to be in close proximity to family, cohabitating adults still need their privacy. The fix? an in-law suite.
What is an in-law suite?
In-law suites are typically unused basements, garages, and sheds converted into a usable living area. Ideally, it has all of the fixings to live independently. This includes having a bathroom, kitchen, living room, and badroom. So again, they can enjoy being close to family but also comfortably recluse when they need to.
There are many benefits to having an in-law suite. Not only can it help bring families together, but it can also increase the value of your home. And not to mention your mother in law can conveniently help cook Sunday dinner.
4 Things to Consider Before Building an In-Law Suite
1. Choose the Ideal Spot
First, consider where you want to build your in-law suite. Do you have an underutilized garage or attic you want to convert? If you’re looking to do an addition, build off an unused space on the first floor. Check with your city to make sure you comply with local building codes.
2. Use Separate Utilities
By separating your utilities from the in-law suite, you can switch them off when it goes unused for an extended time. This also helps split the bill faster if you ever rent it out to another occupant.
3. Consider Your Parent’s Current & Future Needs
As your parent’s age, they may need special accommodations. Take all things into consideration including wheelchair accessibility, shower seats, and grab bars in the shower.
4. Find a Certified Contractor
